The Lesson:
This week, the Come, Follow Me: Book of Mormon manual asks us to read Jacob 5-7. In the Latter Day Parables, Auggie is determined to understand the Allegory of the Olive Tree, found in Jacob 5. In simple terms, Mom helps Auggie figure out the meaning on his own.
The Allegory of the Olive Tree can sometimes be difficult to read. But if we break it down, we can help our children understand the basics of Zenos’ story. For this parable, explaining the grafting of the trees is left out, as we don’t want to confuse the kids too much. For now, all we want is for our children to receive the ultimate lesson.
As you read the story provided, use the puppet visuals as you go. If you’d like, show your children a picture of an olive tree like Mom did for Auggie. Provided in the Quick Clicks below is an Allegory of the Olive Tree Meaning Match Activity. You can use each picture as visuals as well as you tell the story. After reading, ask your children to match the parts of the story to their meanings (Jesus Christ matches with Lord of the Vineyard, etc).
What You Need:
- Cut-outs of Auggie and Mom. If you haven’t yet, download the free Original Latter Day Parables Family cut-outs to get your visuals for this week’s story. Print, cut out, and laminate the cut-outs and then store them in your Come, Follow Me: Book of Mormon Binder for future use.
- “Understanding the Allegory of the Olive Tree” story. Provided in the Quick Clicks below is a PDF document of the story that you can download for free. Print out the story and store it in your Come, Follow Me: Book of Mormon Binder.
- Allegory of the Olive Tree Meaning Match Activity. Provided in the Quick Clicks below is a PDF version of the activity. Print it out on card stock paper and cut out along the lines. You can laminate for durability. This activity can be used as visuals as you tell the story and to match the parts of the story with their meanings. This way, your children visually can understand the Allegory and its meaning
