The Lesson
This week, the Come, Follow Me: Book of Mormon manual asks us to read Mosiah 7-10. In the Latter Day Parables, May is confronted by a friend about why we have a living prophet today. Wondering about the answer herself, May goes to Dad about the inquiry. Dad explains that a prophet is a man called of God and is given very special gifts from Him. With those gifts, the prophet can guide and warn God’s children. We need prophets today just as much as prophets of old were needed.
Before reading this story, read Mosiah 8:16-17 and gain an understanding of the scriptures for yourself. As you read the story, use the visuals provided below. Warnings and guidance has been given by prophets in your own lifetime. Explain to your children different experiences when the prophet has helped guide you in your life.
Make sure your children understand that a prophet is a mouthpiece of God. I like to think of a prophet like a telephone. Pretend you’re on a phone call with God. Without the phone, you wouldn’t be able to hear what God tells you. Just like a phone, a prophet relays the messages God wants us to hear.
Provide a picture of our prophet and have your children memorize his name. If you’d like, give a brief history of our prophet and explain what he has done to help with progress in the church.
